Central in the highlands of the peninsula and surrounded by pine forests, Kassandrino, a very old village with 100 houses and 240 residents, is located.
The name derives from the adjacent village Kassandria. Back than rangers occupied the place in winter as a residence for themselves and their cattle before they finally settled down.

A walk through the narrow streets is like a journey through history. The visitor encounters farms, small family establishments, old houses and even older ruins idyllic embedded in a scenery with pine forests and wide highlands.

The locals are very hospitable. A visit to one of the very traditional taverns allows the visitor to experience a delicious impression of the culinary specialties of the region.

One of the historical buildings in Kassandrino is the old church of 'the Holy Trinity' with its beautiful murals. It was built on ancient catacombs and outlasting many centuries on this place.
During the fifties further two churches were built of regional hewn stone. One is the church of 'the Assumption' in the center of the village.
The church 'St Georges' is situated 3km outside the village on a with beautiful old trees surrounded plateau where annually on April 23th the St. Georgiou observance is taking place on its square. The ceremony in the morning is followed by a boisterous celebration with music, dance and grilled food.

Beekeeping, honey production and olive oil production in exceptionally good quality are important pillars of this community.

 

Archaeological remains prove inhabitation since ancient times and in the Byzantine era. During the revolution 1821most places on Kassandra have been destroyed to a large extend by the Ottoman Empire. 1826 the remained survivors returned slowly in an attempt to rebuild their village.
However, a community was formed only in 1918, mainly by surviving residents from the nearby villages Polychrono and Kriopigi (formerly 'Pzarakia'). Though, few years later many people left the place again to re-build their own communities.

 

In a distance of 6km on the seaside is Mola Kalyva. It belongs to the community of Kassandrino. According to history, the name refers on a patron maned Mola ('Mola Kalyva' – 'Mola's hut'), who lived in a hut nearby and cared for the monks in this area. Mola's Hut, called by the locals for a long time, the place maintained its name.
It's a principally more quiet area where nice hotels, restaurants and bars integrate into the landscape without dominating it. Mola Kalyvas environment appeals by untouched nature and long, beautifully beaches. It is a perfect
holiday-location for visitors who prefer more quiet areas during their vacations, for those who look for relaxation, love to let themselves enchanted by walking on picturesque abbeys and enjoy original landscapes in dry climates with all senses.
