Strays
Staying Dogs and cats are a difficult topic in Greece and in general in South-European countries. Certainly a life as a straying dog or cat isn’t an easy one, especially in the off-season.
What’s the right and most helpful way to deal with it?
We have to differ between stays in the village and stays in the wild. We also have to make differences between 2nd generation strays and the new ones.
Some cats or dogs you see in the villages still might belong to anyone or have someone who basically takes care about them. The dogs you spot outside the villages are the really homeless ones. So what’s the best way to help?
Not helping but important to know: most difficult it is for the new or 1st generation stays because they are not familiar with self-supply. Dogs and cats which were born on the street don’t know any other type of life and get better arranged with it.
For cats it’s easier to survive as they never completely lost their talent in hunting birds, mousses or in difficult times even a worm. Dogs certainly have more difficulties to get them fed.
I’d never say not feed a stay, (I also always have some food in my car) but a fed but not sterilized animal certainly will breed.
Generally the best thing to do is to catch them and let them being sterilized to prevent more little strays to be born, facing the same difficult destiny. So it would be "only" the current homeless cats and dogs, who should be helped to lead a happier life
Adoption
If you would like to adopt a cat or a dog to take back to your own country it must be chipped, vaccinated and be issued with a pet passport.
You may also need to board the animal until he/she is ready to travel.
This is not a big thing.
The vet can arrange the passport and injections.

Local Animal Shelters
Running an animal shelter in Greece means: working to the max with best efforts under worst possible circumstances. There are far too much animals in need, the budget is low, the donations are few and more volunteers would be needed.
Their mission: taking medical & psychological care for the abandoned ones and sterilize as much strays as possible to prevent that further generations are born in a misery.
Help by Donation
The Halkidiki-Project enables personal contact to the local animal shelter where donations can be done.
Animal shelters always need food, antibiotics & cleaning supplies such as bleach, mops, buckets, towels and sheets. People love to send toys. This is a very nice touch but food, meds and cleaning supplies are far more required.
One-Off donations are very welcome but monthly support, even really small amounts helps them a lot to budget their monthly calculation.
